When photographing the Dolomites leaves its mark

An unexpected gift from one of our guests who stayed at the Smart Hotel Saslong.

Some mornings start just like any other. Every once in a while, we see the courier walk through the front door, usually hauling the standard large boxes of supplies. But the other day, something different happened. The courier didn't arrive with the usual heavy crates, but with a significantly smaller rectangular package. Intrigued, we began to unbox it until the contents were revealed: a book.

“Il cuore delle Dolomiti di Alessandro Gruzza" (The heart of the Dolomites by Alessandro Gruzza).

Alessandro was our guest some time ago and decided to share his work and his passion for photography with us. Upon opening the first page, we found a dedication:

|| “To the friends of Smart Hotel Saslong, a message of beauty and respect from the very heart of these spectacular mountains.

That was the exact moment the book stopped being just a book.

Smart Hotel Saslong: where photographers feel at home

Over the years, our hotel in the heart of Val Gardena has become a landmark for photography lovers. At Smart Hotel Saslong, we frequently host individual photographers and groups who appreciate our strategic location and the innovative spaces we offer to cultivate this passion. They arrive with packed backpacks, tripods, alarms set for dawn, and that focused expression of someone who knows that the light waits for no one. After all, the Dolomites are never the same; they shift in color and atmosphere constantly, and those who photograph them know this better than anyone.

A shared beauty

This book is a tribute to all of this: to the Dolomites and their uniqueness, told through Alessandro’s photographic eye. What truly struck us about this gift is that he doesn't just capture the silhouettes of these majestic peaks; he manages to convey their essence and that almost ancestral emotion one feels when coming into contact with the “Pale Mountains.”

We flipped through the pages slowly, recognizing peaks and landscapes, and realized this book belonged right here.

Not in a drawer. Not in an office.

It belongs here at Smart Hotel Saslong, which has become a meeting point for photographers, hikers, and travelers who adore these mountains. For this reason, the book is available to anyone who wants to pause for a moment, sit in our lounge, and discover the Dolomites through the eyes of someone who truly knows how to capture their uniqueness. You will find it on the book display in the lounge, ready to be enjoyed. Leaving this book in the lounge is our way of expressing what hospitality means to us: creating spaces that inspire the freedom to live out one's passions.

Thank you, Alessandro, for the thoughtful gift and for reminding us that beauty, when shared, is always worth a little more!
